Concepts related to increased susceptibility of local sources of loblolly pine to southern pine beetles

In a planting near Aiken, SC, loblolly pine saplings from an eastern seed source were significantly more susceptible to the southern pine beetle (SPB) than were loblolly saplings from western sources. In California, heavier infestations of the fir engraver beetle were reported on local than on distant sources of white fir. Such results conflict with the notion of native hosts and pests evolving together and developing mutual tolerance. The SPB case and the general concept deserve additional attention.
