Growth and Yield Modeling--A Place for Genetic Improvement Effects

A wide array of growth and yield models, ranging from whole stand models to individual tree models, has been developed for southern species. These models for "woods run" stock can potentially be modified to provide preliminary estimates of growth and yield in stands established from genetically improved stock. The approach necessary and the likelihood of success in incorporating genetic improvement effects in growth and yield models depends on the components of the model, the predictor variables used, the interdependence of the components, and, of course, the extent and nature of the data base on genetic effects.
