Predictions of Expected Gains in Resistance to Fusiform Rust in Loblolly Pine

Although properly timed fungicidal sprays are effective in control offusiform rust in forest nurseries, no economical chemical or silvicultural method of control has been developed to control the disease in plantations. The most promising mode of defense against future losses to this disease is the selection, breeding, and wide-spread distribution of genetically resistant strains of loblolly and slash pines.
