"Fall Mosaic" of Loblolly Pine in a Forest Tree Nursery

A mosaic pattern of yellow and green seedlings has been observed in loblolly pine ( Pinus taeda L.) seedbeds in the fall at several forest nurseries in the southern United States. Seedlings in green areas appear to be associated with mycorrhizal symbionts. Sampling at one nursery in Alabama confirmed a strong relationship between Pisolithus tinctorius (Pers.) Coker & Couch and green seedlings. It is hypothesized that stressing seedlings by undercutting can result in differential seedling response according to the degree of mycorrhizal infection.
