Benefits and Techniques for Evaluating Outplanting Success
Although outplanting information is essential to good nursery management, many nurseries do not have the time or funds to follow the survival and growth of their seedlings after they are outplanted. The benefits of evaluating outplantings are discussed along with types of sampling plots and an example of a survey form. It is concluded that, if they don't have one already, all forest and conservation nurseries should develop a system for monitoring outplanting performance. This should be considered a normal "cost of doing business" and that for state forest nurseries, federal cost-share funds could be used to insure that this essential information is collected.
