Application of Foliar Fertilizer During Bud Initiation Treatments to Container-Grown Conifer Seedlings

Foliar fertilizer applications to ponderosa pine and Douglas-fir seedlings during bud initiation treatments significantly impacted seedling quality. Timing of bud formation was undisturbed in ponderosa pine seedlings but delayed in Douglas-fir seedlings by foliar fertilization. Foliar fertilizer enhanced foliar nitrogen concentration, seedling caliper and height growth, bud length, and shoot-root ratio of both species. Root growth potential was unaffected by foliar fertilization, while differences in seedling cold hardiness were modest.
