Cold Storage of Containerized Planting Stock and Subsequent Performance After Outplanting
Two-year growth performance of containerized Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L.) seedlings overwintered out-doors was compared with that of cold stored (-5°C) seedlings. When planted early in the spring before the onset of shoot growth, seedlings overwintered outdoors were of superior quality and performed better than cold stored stock, particularly in the second growing season. The results also indicate that cold stored seedlings do not perform well when planted late in the growing season.
