Field trip notes: Korbel Forest Nursery

The Korbel Forest Nursery of Simpson Timber Company is located in Korbel, California, off State Highway 299 approximately 20 miles from Eureka. There are three full time employees with a peak seasonal employment of 30 people. The container nursery was established in 1974 and the first crop of seedlings was grown in 1975. There are 15 greenhouses (60,000 sq. ft.) and one shadeframe (30,000 sq. ft.). The primary container used is the Leach cell. The current seedling inventory is seven million and the current nursery capacity is nine million. Species grown are redwood, Douglas-fir, Sitka spruce, ponderosa pine, jeffery pine, lodgepole pine, sugar pine, red fir, white fir and grand fir.
