Early Collection Dates for Southern Pine Cones

Loblolly and slash pine cones can be collected 2 or 3 weeks before maturation, if they are stored 3 to 5 weeks before processing and if some reductions in yield and viability are acceptable. Long leaf cones should be collected only when mature, since storage decreases germination of seed from immature cones.
