Review of Tree Planting in the United States

I have been asked to talk to you about the need for reforestation,the present situation, current accomplishments and the outlook for the future. First, I should like to discuss the "Size of the Planting Job in the United States: The Forest Service" publication, Timber Resource for Americas Future shows a backlog of about 52 million acres all ownerships, in need of planting or direct seeding. This 52 million acres is nonstocked or poorly stocked; i.e., less than 10 to 15 percent stocked.
