Effects of Fertilization on Tree Seedling Establishment and Growth in a Lupin Field in Southern Iceland

Oskarsson, H. and Sigurgeirsson, A. IN: Proceedings of the 10th International Lupin Conference, p. 203-205. Wild and cultivated lupins from the tropics to the poles, edited by E. van Santen and G.D. hill. International Lupin Association. 2002.

Large areas in southern Iceland are glacial outwash plains with soil composed of coarse gravel that contains only slight amounts of organic matter. Such barren and nutrient-deficient areas have been regarded as unsuitable for afforestation. Rehabilitation of such areas using Nootka lupin has, however, been practiced in Iceland for several decades, and lupin-covered areas represent a potential forestland. The aims of the study were: (1) to test if fertilizer application had any effect on survival and growth of tree seedlings planted at a site previously rehabilitated with lupin, and (2) to examine the long-term vitality of downy birch, Sitka spruce, and lodgepole pine growing at the lupin site.
