About Us
The Western Maryland Resource Conservation and Development Council (RC&D) Inc. is a non-profit organization in business since 1993 whose mission is to build and sustain resource conservation programs which raise the quality of social, economic, and environmental development in our region. We are involved in projects dealing with environmental restoration, alternative energy, carbon sequestration, research on beneficial uses of fly ash from coal fired power plants, forestry, remediation of acid mine drainage impacts, improvements of water quality in watersheds, and projects addressing conservation and agriculture.
Context of the Position
In coordination with the Maryland Department of Natural Resources (MD DNR) Forest Service this position serves at the State Tree Nursery as an Assistant Nursery Manager in the areas of seedling production, seed processing, seedling harvest, seedling processing and facility maintenance supporting the main goals of protecting the Chesapeake Bay and sustaining populations of living resources and healthy ecosystems.
Work Duties
- Inspection of seedbeds and specifying schedules for weeding, herbicide, pesticide and fertilizer application, pruning/trimming and rodent/wildlife damage control.
- Operates farm tractors and Fobro plant lifters and combines to remove seedlings from the soil for transport to cold storage
- Involved in all aspects of seedling inventory, harvest, packaging, storage and distribution.
- Planning, scheduling and supervision of planting and maintenance of seed production orchard; collection, processing and storing seeds form orchard and the wild; identifying new sources of seed and maintaining an accurate seed inventory.
- Operates specialized equipment to collect, extract, clean, and improve the quality of collected seed
- Operates specialized equipment to form seedbeds, plant seedbeds and for seedling cultural practices.

Professional Experience and Qualifications
Education: A Bachelor of Science degree in Forestry from a school of forestry accredited by the Society of American Foresters

Notes:
- Candidates may substitute the possession of a Master of Science degree approved by the State Board of Foresters for the required Bachelor’s degree.
- The education requirement is pursuant to Business Occupations and Professions Article, Sections 7-206 and 7-304 of the Annotated Code of Maryland.
- Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military service experience as a commissioned officer in the natural resources management and biological sciences classifications or natural resources management and biological sciences specialty codes in the forestry field of work on a year-for-year basis for the required education.
Licenses, Registrations and Certifications
Employees in this classification may be assigned duties which require the operation of a motor vehicle. Employees assigned such duties will be required to possess a motor vehicle operator’s license valid in the State of Maryland.
In addition, the following are expected of applicants:
- Strong communication skills
- Willingness to work outside in rough terrain and inclement weather
- Proficiency in use of computers and applications relevant to conservation is expected (such as MS office suite)
- The ability to work independently while effectively managing multiplepriorities
- A valid driver's license
- US Citizenship
- A clean criminal record verified by a standard background check with local, state, and national law enforcement agencies. A security clearance is not a requirement
- Must be willing to relocate or commute to Preston, Maryland
Pay Scale
$19.12 - $22.00 an hour
