Family Scientific Name: Ranunculaceae
Family Common Name: Buttercup
Scientific Name: Myosurus minimus (Greene) G. R. Campb. apus
Common Name: Little mousetail
Species Code: MYSE2
Ecotype: Vernal Pools
General Distribution: Baja California, California, Oregon
Known Invasiveness: None
Propagation Goal: Seeds
Propagation Method: Seed
ProductType: Propagules (seeds, cutings, poles, etc.)
Time To Grow: 4 months
Target Specifications: Our goal was to produce as many seeds as possible for reintroduction.
Propagule Collection: Wild collected seeds were collected along maternal lines in Dennery Canyon, San Diego County, CA
Propagule Processing: Seeds were carefully removed from scapes. Seeds are enclosed in a small envelope but are readily propagated without being removed from it.
Pre-Planting Treatments: None
Growing Area Preparation/
Annual Practices for Perennial Crops:
Pots were sterilized prior to use with Physan 20.
Establishment Phase: Seeds were surface sown along maternal lines in 2” pots filled with sunshine mix #3. Pots were maintained evenly moist with gentle misting until germination was seen. Small plants were kept moist with gentle watering.
Length of Establishment Phase: 4 weeks
Active Growth Phase: Plants were maintained evenly moist. They were fertilized once monthly with a 100ppm solution of 20-20-20 fertilizer.
Length of Active Growth Phase: 6 weeks
Hardening Phase: Once plants began flowering watering was reduced to once weekly to allow slight drying between watering. Once plants were in the fruiting stage, watering was reduced further and the plants were allowed to slowly dry down.
Length of Hardening Phase: 6 weeks
Harvesting, Storage and Shipping: Plants were harvested along maternal lines by carefully cutting off the scapes after being allowed to dry down in the pots. Seeds were removed from scapes and allowed to slowly dry down in the cool dry environment of the seed bank. Seeds were then sealed in Mylar bags for storage.
Outplanting performance on typical sites: Seed has not yet been used for reintroduction.
Other Comments: Prolific seed production under cultivation.
