General Distribution: Widely distributed across north America, including several subspecies. Occurs at low to subalpine elevations; often a pioneer species on open slopes and meadows, roadcuts and gravelly soils.
Propagation Goal: Plants
Propagation Method: Seed
ProductType: Container (plug)
Stock Type: Plugs for seed increase field establishment
Time To Grow: 60 days
Target Specifications: Well-developed roots
Propagule Collection: Predation hit some scouted coastal populations hard in 2022
Pre-Planting Treatments: None
Growing Area Preparation/
Annual Practices for Perennial Crops:
On 1-15-23, Anaphalis margaritacea seed was sown in 72-well mini-plug trays from Steuwe & Sons, into Sunshine mix #4 potting media with incorporated 16-16-16 Osmocote, slow release fertilizer and Micromax micronutrients. A ¼-inch well was dibbled into each plug and approximately 5 seeds sown per cell. The seed was covered by a ⅛-inch layer of fine vermiculite. Trays were placed into a greenhouse heated to 65℉ during the day and 55℉ at night.
Establishment Phase: The earliest germinants emerged 5 days after seeding with complete germination at 15 days after seeding.
Length of Establishment Phase: 2 weeks
Active Growth Phase: Trays were kept in a greenhouse heated to 65℉ during the day and 55℉ at night. The greenhouse used artificial lighting via high pressure sodium (HPS) bulbs, set to an 18-hour day. Plugs were hand watered as needed to remain moist until outplanting.
Length of Active Growth Phase: 30 days
Hardening Phase: Seedling trays were brought outside and lightly covered with remay cloth on 3-1-23 to acclimatize and harden off.
Length of Hardening Phase: 2 weeks
