B. pilularis is found in windswept dunes and headlands along the coast and the foothills of the Sierra Nevada; from Oregon to San Diego County and the Channel islands, California.

Semi-hardwood cuttings are collected between April 1st and June 30th.
Cutting length is 5 cm (2 inches).

Cuttings are kept cool and moist until they are treated and placed in flats.

Cuttings are dipped in a mild bleach solution for 30 seconds.
Cuttings are treated with Hormex (3000 ppm IBA) rooting powder and struck in flats containing 2:1 Perlite/Vermiculite.
200 Cuttings are struck 4 cm (1.5 inch) deep per flat.
% Rooting: 70%

Fully Controlled Greenhouse.
Flats arekept in the greenhouse and watered with an automatic mist system until roots are fully developed.

Planting Method:Transplanting Cuttings.
Time to Transplant:70 days.
Cuttings are transplanted to individual containers 2"x7" tubes (Deepot 16) containing standard potting mix of peat moss, fir bark, perlite, and sand. Cuttings are placed in the shadehouse and are irrigated with an automatic system.
Transplant Survival averages 80%.
