University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Native Plant Nursery
Founded in 2020, the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Native Plant Nursery is located on the UTRGV campus in Brownsville, Texas, and is directed by Dr. Christopher Gabler, an Associate Professor of plant ecology and sustainability in the School of Earth, Environmental, and Marine Science (SEEMS). We provide propagation, research, and consulting services for southern, eastern, and coastal Texas ecosystems, with an emphasis on the Lower Rio Grande Valley region. We specialize in the propagation and repopulation of tree and shrub species native to the Tamaulipan thornscrub habitats of southern Texas and northern Mexico, as well as federally listed endangered plant species native to the 4-county Lower Rio Grande Valley region (Cameron, Hidalgo, Starr, and Willacy counties). We perform research on the biology, ecology, propagation, and repopulation of these thornscrub and endangered plant species, as well as on the restoration more broadly of the ecosystems where these plants are found. We are a non-profit entity and part of a state institution of higher education. UTRGV is the nation's second largest Hispanic Serving Institution (HSI).
