An Ex Situ Gene Conservation Plan for Fraser Fir

Fraser fir (Abies fraseri (Pursh) Poir.) is an economically and ecologically important conifer species that faces an uncertain future in its natural stands. The exotic balsam woolly adelgid (Adelges piceae Ratz.) has decimated Fraser fir populations during the last 50 years, while changing climate conditions threaten to render Fraser fir’s current habitat on Southern Appalachian mountaintops unsuitable. We have developed an ex situ gene conservation plan to help facilitate the restoration of Fraser fir into its natural stands if such action becomes necessary, and to ensure the continued existence of a genetic resource base for the economically important Christmas tree industry.
